Whose name is on your app?
Fifteen companies sell restaurants an app, online ordering or loyalty. We counted how many apps each one has on the Apple App Store, read whose name is on each listing, and pulled every price they publish. The biggest builder puts the app in the restaurant's name. Most of the rest keep it in their own. Then we put our own offer next to them.
Who builds them
Fifteen companies, and whose name is on the app.
The count is the number of apps under each company's own Apple developer account. When the builder's name is on the listing, the app, its reviews and its installs stay with the builder if the restaurant leaves. Click a homepage to visit it.

How we countedApple's public iTunes lookup service lists every app under a developer account, but returns at most 200 per store. For accounts that hit the cap we combined seven country stores (US, CA, GB, AU, NZ, IE, MX), so a "+" figure is a floor. Owner's apps sit under thousands of restaurant accounts, so we found them instead by their shared bundle ID (com.owner.*) across 256 US searches; that count is also a floor. Toast and TapMango do the same as Owner: 213+ and 83+ restaurant apps under bundle IDs com.toasttab.* and com.tapmango.*, found in a second sweep of 9,375 US and Canadian restaurant apps. Clover, Square, SpotOn and Shift4 (including its Givex and Revel brands) showed no apps under their clients' names.
How big is the market
About 245,000 restaurants suit an app. Most have none.
| Step | United States | Canada | Alberta | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurants with employees | ~620,000 | ~89,000 | ~12,350 | BLS 2025; Statistics Canada 2025 (Alberta figure includes bars) |
| Independents and small groups | ~435,000 | ~62,000 | ~8,600 | Estimate: ~70% single-unit or small group; chains build their own apps |
| Repeat-visit formats | ~215,000 | ~31,000 | ~4,300 | About half of US restaurants are limited-service (coffee, quick service, pizza, bakery); same half applied to Canada |
| Enough online orders to justify an app | 65,000 to 110,000 | 9,000 to 16,000 | 1,300 to 2,200 | Estimate: 30 to 50% qualify. Owner aims its Flat Rate at C$7,000+ a month online |

Three years, one location
What a branded app costs over three years.
Only vendors that publish a price for a plan that includes a branded app are charted. Fees are worked out on $5,000 a month in app and online orders. Card processing is left out for everyone: every shop pays about 2.9% + 30¢ online to someone, and the builders that process payments themselves charge about the same. Apple and Google developer fees are left out too.
Three-year cost to the restaurant
36 months of plan, setup and per-order fees. Hover a bar for the working.
Read it straightCraver, Restolabs and UpMenu cost less than we do on the sticker. What they do not do is put the app in your name: their account owns the listing, the reviews and the installs. Owner, the biggest builder, does publish under the restaurant's own account, and charges about twice what we do once its 5% fee is counted, plus another 5% to your guests.
