Alberta grants for software and AI: what is open now
The question: “Is there a grant in Alberta that will pay for part of my software or AI project?”
Short answer: no grant will simply buy your software, but two open programs can pay for part of the work. The Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant covers 75% of eligible job training costs, to a maximum of $5,000 in Canadian dollars per trainee each fiscal year. Manufacturers can also apply for up to $30,000 in matching funding for technology. If you are building something new rather than buying it, the real money is in the tax system, not in a grant.

No Alberta grant will simply buy your software
Most funding for small business in Alberta pays for people, equipment or research. Very little of it pays for a software licence or a monthly subscription. If you came here hoping a program would cover your new booking system or an AI tool, read on before you spend hours on an application.
The one program open to almost any Alberta employer is the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant. The province pays 75% of eligible training costs to a maximum of $5,000 in Canadian dollars for each employed trainee each fiscal year, and you pay the other 25% 1. One employer can claim up to $100,000 in a fiscal year 1.
It is a training grant, and the page is honest about that. Its eligible costs are exam fees, course fees and textbooks or software, and it says employee wages and general business assets are not eligible 2. So the licence you want is not the thing being funded. The course that teaches your crew to use it can be.
That is less of a technicality than it sounds. Under digital and technological skills, the province lists courses such as Generative AI Applications, AI for Business and Microsoft Copilot 3. If part of your project is training staff on a new system, that part has a real funding path today.
Manufacturers have the one grant that buys technology
The Alberta Manufacturing Productivity Grant is a provincial program run by Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters. It offers up to $30,000 in matching funding for technology upgrades and new machinery and equipment 4.
The gate is narrow. You need a physical location in Alberta that makes, refines, refurbishes or processes a product or material, and between 5 and 750 employees 4. A consulting firm, a clinic, a trades contractor or a shop does not fit that description.
It is a 2-year pilot that began in mid-2025 and is expected to support approximately 130 businesses 4. Matching means you pay a share of the bill, so know your own number before you apply. The province calls this funding technology upgrades and new machinery and equipment 4. Ask the program directly if the software you have in mind counts before you build a budget around it.
Three programs people still ask about are closed
Alberta Innovates ran the vouchers that small firms used to pay for technology work. It has now said it will halt acceptance of new applications for six programs within its startup and small business group, effective May 29 at 4:00 p.m. MDT 6.
The Micro Voucher Program was the one most owners were pointed at. It provided up to $10,000 to help Alberta tech companies design or develop innovative technological solutions, and required a minimum 25 per cent cash contribution 5. Its page now shows intake status closed, with registration closed on May 29, 2026 at 4:00 pm MDT 5. Applications sent before the deadline are still being reviewed, existing agreements remain in place, and Alberta Innovates says an updated suite of programs arrives in Summer 2026 6.
The federal Canada Digital Adoption Program is the one people remember best. Its Boost Your Business Technology stream paid 90% of the cost of an advisory service up to a maximum of $15,000 per small or medium business 7, with a matching 0% loan of up to $100,000 7. It stopped taking new applications, and you needed a signed grant agreement before February 19, 2024 7.
If someone offers to get you digital adoption money this year, check the closing date on the government's own page before you pay them anything.
Each bar is a cap, not what you will get. The productivity grant figure is per trainee per fiscal year and covers training, not tools 1 2. The manufacturing grant is matching funding to a maximum of $30,000 and only for manufacturers with between 5 and 750 employees 4. The two closed bars are here because owners still budget around them 5 7.
If you are building something new, the money is in the tax system
Alberta's Innovation Employment Grant arrives through your corporate tax return rather than through an application window. It provides benefits on up to $4 million in annual R&D spending 8. The rate is 8% of eligible R&D spending up to your base level and 20% on the amount above it, and the spending must have been incurred in Alberta after December 31, 2020 8.
Federally, most Canadian-controlled private corporations can earn a refundable credit at the enhanced rate of 35% on qualified research spending, up to the expenditure limit 9. That limit is $6 million for tax years beginning after December 15, 2024, and spending over it earns the basic rate of 15% 9.
Refundable is the word that matters. The credit can come back as cash in a year your company owes no tax 9. These are the largest numbers on this page, and they also have the strictest test.
Routine software work does not count as research
The federal rule is short. The work must be conducted for the advancement of scientific knowledge or for the purpose of achieving a technological advancement 10, and it must be a systematic investigation or search carried out by means of experiment or analysis 10.
The same page lists what does not count. Training, on-the-job learning, hiring an expert to apply what they already know, and purchasing proprietary knowledge are all excluded 10.
Read that list twice before anyone promises you a credit. Installing a package, configuring a CRM, standing up a normal website, or paying a developer to do work they already know how to do is not research. A claim that holds up usually means you tried something that could have failed, wrote down what you tried and what happened, and learned something you did not know before. Keep that record while the work is happening, not at tax time.
When there is no grant there is still a loan
The Canada Small Business Financing Program is a loan arranged through your own bank, with the government sharing the lender's risk. Software is named in it. The class includes the purchase or development of computer software as well as the purchase of websites 11, and the page counts off-the-shelf software, custom-made software and mobile applications 11.
The caps differ by what you are buying. A loan can reach $1,000,000, of which a maximum of $500,000 is for a purpose other than real property, and a maximum of $150,000 can be used to finance intangible assets and working capital costs 11. Ask your lender which class your project falls into before you assume a number.
Prairies Economic Development Canada also runs Business Scale-up and Productivity, and it is accepting expressions of interest on an ongoing basis 12. Read the word repayable first: it offers interest-free, repayable funding to incorporated businesses 12. That lowers your borrowing cost. It does not lower the cost of the project.
What to do before you fill in any application
Start with the dates, not the dollar amounts. Open the program's own page on alberta.ca, canada.ca or the delivery partner's site and look for intake status and a closing date. The Alberta Innovates pages say closed in plain words 5 6. Grant listing sites, newsletters and consultants lag behind by many months.
Then split your project into three parts: the licence or subscription, the build and setup work, and the training. Different programs pay for different parts, and the part most likely to be funded is the training. Price each part separately so you can apply for the piece that is actually eligible, not the whole invoice.
Never let a vendor be the reason you apply. No program funds a vendor. They fund your training, your equipment or your research, and you are the applicant. If a salesperson tells you their product is grant approved, ask them which program, which page and which closing date, then check it yourself.
For the build itself, a ready-made product is usually the right answer for a booking system, a quote tool or a tidy website. You should expect to pay for that out of your own pocket. Custom work earns its keep when the job has to follow your own data or workflow in a way no product does. It is also the only kind of work with any chance of meeting the research test above.
If you want a second opinion on whether your project fits any of these programs, book a free call and we will tell you straight, including when the answer is that none of them apply.
